The previous name of the Department of Applied Inorganic Chemistry (till 2003) was Department of Inorganic Chemical Technology which is founded in 1925. The first head of department was Assoc. Prof. Ivan Trifonov (1897-1974) who became a professor in 1935. In the period of years 1927 – 1936 he wrote first Bulgarian textbooks on inorganic technology and metallurgy -”Lectures on Inorganic Chemical Technology” (1927), “Technological investigation of coals, coke, cement and clay”(1932), “Metallurgy of metals with more practical importance”(1931) and “Short course of metallurgy”(1936). The main research work of Prof. Trifonov was in the field of metallurgy and fuels.

From 1965 to 1979 the head of Department of Inorganic Chemical Technology was Prof. Aleksandar Spassov (1914-1979). Under his guidance have been started both the new research investigations and lectures in the field of Metallography, Kinetics of heterogeneous reactions and X-ray analysis.

From 1979 to 1997 the head of Department of Inorganic Chemical Technology was Prof. Stoyan Budurov (1930-1997). He introduced in the teaching and research new topics, like nucleation and crystal growth, crystallization of metallic glasses, thermodynamics of binary and ternary systems, diffusion in solids, as well as lecture courses in Solid state chemistry and Applied inorganic chemistry.

From 1999 to 2008 the head of Department of Inorganic Chemical Technology (till 2003) and Department of Applied Inorganic Chemistry (from 2003) is Prof. Tony Spassov, now dean of the Faculty of Chemistry. He started with his group research activities in several areas of the modern materials science and solid state chemistry: synthesis and characterization of nanocrystalline and nanostructured materials with different applications; design of hydrogen storage materials; kinetics of heterogeneous reactions and phase transformations; high temperature oxidation of metals. A master program in Materials Science, managed by prof. T.Spassov, was started in 2001, as well as several new Bachelor lecture courses in the field of the modern materials science were introduced.

From 2008 the head of Department of Applied Inorganic Chemistry is Assoc. Prof. Micha Karavasteva.

In 2005 in the Department of Applied Inorganic Chemistry were founded two laboratories:

Laboratory of Solid state Chemistry and Materials Science and Laboratory of Inorganic

Chemical Technology and Environment Protection.
